Getting the Most Out of Your Prayer and Fasting.

A Closer Walk: Unleashing the Power of Prayer and Fasting

As we step into a new year, many of us find ourselves longing for a deeper connection with God. We yearn to move beyond the mundane routines of daily life and experience a profound spiritual transformation. But how do we achieve this? How can we truly draw closer to the Divine and unleash the power of our faith?

The answer lies in an ancient spiritual practice that has been largely forgotten in our modern world: prayer and fasting. This powerful combination, mentioned over 80 times in the Bible, has been a cornerstone of faithful living for centuries. Yet, for many Christians today, it remains an unexplored territory.

Why should we fast? The reasons are manifold and deeply impactful:

To Fight Sin and Temptation
We all have sins that easily entangle us, temptations that seem impossible to overcome. But what if there was a way to break free from these chains? Prayer and fasting offer us a spiritual "nuclear weapon" against the enemy's attacks. As Matthew 17:21 reminds us, "However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."

When we fast, we're not just battling in the flesh, but in the spirit. We're engaging in spiritual warfare, pulling down strongholds and casting down arguments that exalt themselves against the knowledge of God (2 Corinthians 10:3-6). It's time we stop accepting defeat and start wielding the powerful weapons God has given us.

To Realign Ourselves with God
Sometimes, our faith becomes dulled. We lose the passion and excitement we once had for God. Fasting acts as a spiritual shock to the system, bringing us back into alignment with our Creator. As Joel 2:12-13 exhorts us, "Now, therefore," says the Lord, "Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning."

Fasting helps us return to God with our whole hearts, rekindling the flame of our first love. It's not just about giving up food; it's about prioritizing our relationship with God above all else.

To Intercede and Intervene
Who in your life needs a supernatural intervention from God? Fasting allows us to stand in the gap for others, interceding on their behalf. Ezekiel 22:30 says, "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one."

God is looking for people who will stand between Him and mankind, ministering on behalf of others. Through fasting and prayer, we can be that bridge, bringing heaven's intervention to earth.

To Get Answers from God
Are you struggling to understand God's will for your life? Do you feel lost in a wilderness season? Fasting can help us gain clarity and wisdom from above. As Ezra 8:23 testifies, "So we fasted and entreated our God for this, and He answered our prayer."

When we fast, we position ourselves to hear God's voice more clearly. We create space in our lives for divine revelation and guidance.

But how should we approach fasting? Here are some practical tips:

Fasting should be challenging. It's not meant to be easy. The whole point is to sacrifice something significant to make room for God.

Fasting should be more than just giving something up. It's equally important to add something in its place – more prayer, Bible study, or acts of service.

Fasting should be about God, not about gaining attention or sympathy from others. As Jesus taught in Matthew 6:16-18, our fasting should be done in secret, focusing on our relationship with the Father.

Know why you're fasting. Have a clear purpose and goal in mind.

Know what you're going to fast. Make a specific plan and stick to it.

Know how you're going to do it. Schedule your fasting and prayer times, and have a plan for how you'll fill the time you'd usually spend on what you're giving up.

As we embark on this journey of prayer and fasting, let's remember that it's not about religious duty or earning God's favor. It's about creating space in our lives for God to move in powerful ways. It's about saying, "God, I want more of You. I want to know You more deeply. I want to experience Your power in my life."

Imagine what could happen if we truly committed to this practice. Picture a church transformed, lives changed, and communities impacted by the power of God. This isn't just a pipe dream – it's the reality that awaits us when we dare to step out in faith and pursue a closer walk with God.

So, as we stand on the threshold of a new year, let's make a bold decision. Let's choose to go deeper with God. Let's embrace the challenge of prayer and fasting, not as a burden, but as an exciting opportunity for spiritual growth and transformation.

Remember, God is waiting. He's looking for your response, ready to act on your behalf. Will you take that step of faith? Will you dare to believe that God can do "immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine" (Ephesians 3:20)?

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Today, let that step be a commitment to prayer and fasting. As you do, prepare your heart for an adventure with God that will surpass your wildest expectations. Get ready to taste and see that the Lord is good, to experience His power in ways you never thought possible.

Your closer walk with God awaits. Are you ready to begin?
